| The cost of paper and toner and the number
of printed pages in the Library's recycling bins has risen
to new levels. With the increasing number of e-journals
and e-textbooks available via the Library’s website
and more curricular material available via the web, paper
and printing costs are expected to further escalate. As
a means of managing printing costs and improving service
to Library users, the Library introduced the Uniprint print
management system in August 2006. See below for answers
to frequently asked questions.

Uniprint is a software solution for managing high volume
printing that provides library users with easy to use print
release stations and precise control over every print job.
At the computer:
- Send a print job as you normally would.
- A popup window will ask for a Novell Username/ Print
Card number.
- SOM Students will enter their Novell username.
- All other users will enter their seven digit card
number located on their print card (99XXXXX). First
time users are required to purchase a print card from
the Card Dispenser Station prior to submitting a print
job.
- Name your print job in the pop-up window.
- Click Print.
- Go to the Release Stations located beside the circulation
desk.
- SOM students can use either of the two Student
Release Stations.
- All other users need to use the All Other Users
Release Station.
At the Release Station:
- Press any key or move the mouse to activate the login
window.
- SOM students need to log in with their Novell username
& password.
- All other users need to swipe their print card.
- Select your print job by clicking it once. Note the
number of pages that will print and the charges .
- Click the "Print" button located on the right
hand side of the screen. Once you click "Print"
the bottom of the screen will display the “printer
number” where a particular print job has been sent.
- Click logoff.
- Proceed to the designated printer and pick up your print
job.
Print cards cost $1.00 and come with a credit of $0.50
on them.
How much does printing cost? (back to top)
SOM Students:
- Simplex (Single-sided) Black & White Laser prints:
$0.06 ea.
- Duplex (double-sided) Black & White Laser prints:
$0.12 ea.
SOM Students get a credit of 750 free prints ($45)
at the beginning of each semester. Students need to add
money to their accounts when they use all of their free
prints.
All others:
- Simplex (Single-sided) Black & White Laser prints:
$0.10 ea.
- Duplex (double-sided) Black & White Laser prints:
$0.20 ea.
Do double-sided pages count as two prints? (back
to top)
Yes, double-sided pages count as two print jobs. The computers
print double-sided pages by default, but can be changed
to single-sided.
When you print a double-sided document the only cost saving
is the paper. Double-sided printing has its own costs, such
as toner, the duplexer in the printer, and additional staff
time needed to clear print jams often caused by double-sided
printing.
How does the system benefit me? (back to
top)
You are less likely to have to wait in line to get your
print job. You will not need to sort through other people’s
print jobs to find your own. You can verify what you print
before it prints. The system will also reduce print volume
and save hundreds of trees and reduce the environmental
waste caused by paper and toner manufacturing and disposal.
How do I add money to my card/account? (back
to top)
SOM students:
SOM students will log in at the Add Value Station with
their Novell usernames and passwords in order to add money
to their account.
All others:
All other users will swipe their print cards at the Add
Value Station in order to add money to their print cards.
What happens to print jobs that are sent to the Release
Station, but not printed? (back to top)
A print request will be removed automatically from the
Release Station if it has not been printed within 12 hours.
You will not be charged for them.
Can a job sent to the printer from the Release Station be
cancelled or stopped from printing? (back
to top)
No. Once a job is selected and released for printing, it
cannot be cancelled.
Can I print from my laptop? (back
to top)
Laptops that are able to connect to the School of Medicine
Novell network are able to download Uniprint client software
that lets them print to the system. Please refer to the
Laptop Printing FAQ for
files and download instructions.
What happens if I lose my card? (back
to top)
If you lose your card, you will need to buy a new card.
We do not refund money or replace your lost card. You will
need to report the loss to the Circulation desk so that
we can prevent your card from being used by anyone else.
Can I pay with my Carolina Card or copy card? (back
to top)
No, all print jobs must be paid for with Uniprint Print
Cards or SOM student Novell accounts. The Carolina Card
and Copy Card systems are not compatible with the Print
Card system.
Where can I use the Uniprint system? (back
to top)
The Uniprint system can only be used in the library. The
Office of Information Technology is responsible for printing
in the basement computer lab.
Are there limitations on how much money I can add
to my account/ print card? (back to top)
You can add unlimited cash the first time you activate
your card. After the first time, you are limited to $50.
