DocView
We would like to call your attention to DocView, a software program that is freely available for
use by libraries and their patrons for receiving and using documents over the Internet. It
provides end users access to electronic bit mapped documents over the Internet, both from image
databases as well as from workstations that scan paper documents and transmit the images. It is
a Windows software application and is compatible with Ariel, a system currently in use by this
library and many others to provide Internet document delivery. DocView may be used both to
receive and use the electronic documents sent from the Ariel system. Once the user receives the
document images on the desktop, he or she may use DocView to review the pages on the screen;
manipulate the image (zoom, scroll, pan, rotate); copy portions of pages of interest; electronically
"bookmark' desired pages; print only the pages needed; and manage collections of documents.
You will find additional information about DocView at the following URL:
http://archive.nlm.nih.gov/proj/docview/project.htm
If you would like assistance in downloading or installing the program, feel free to call Ed Sperr
at 733-3347. If you have other questions about using the software, call Rhonda Green at 733-3347.

Biomed Journal Article
Archive
The Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Dr. Harold Varmus, is making news
these days with his proposal to store all biomedical articles, before and after their publication, in
an electronic archive. The Physics Community has a prototype archive housed at the Los
Alamos National Laboratory. Federal funding is being sought by Varmus for this bold plan.

Nature Medicine
Nature Medicine is now available in our library as a print subscription. This fairly
new journal has a 1997 Impact Factor of 22.127 and a 1998 Impact Factor of 28.114. Interlibrary
Loan usage indicates this will be an important asset to our journal collection.

The Body of Knowledge,
Electric
If you have been using electronic journals or reading in the science literature about them, you
know that E-Journals are now a reality. A 1996 Science article reported there were
"over 100 peer reviewed scientific, medical and technical journals." Statistics for 1999 indicate
almost 7000 academic/scholarly serial publications in electronic format. Access to each
journal/publisher is somewhat different, but our library is attempting to register for all full-text
journals that mirror our current print collection. Many publishers are providing online access for
free if we have a subscription to the print journal. The journals, which we must register for or
buy access to, will be accessible from the SOM Campus and environs; unfortunately, you cannot
access them from your home as yet. Visit our webpage at
http://uscm.med.sc.edu/LIBRARY/JOURNAL.SHTML
We now have electronic access to 200+ journals through the page, and are adding more as they
become available. Our goal for 1998-1999 was to gain electronic access to our 100 most used
journal titles. Currently we have access to over 75 of those titles. The remainder are either not
yet available online, or are published by Elsevier or Academic Press, which currently have
purchasing requirements we cannot afford. Our library and Thomas Cooper Library are
cooperating in gaining access to as many of each other's electronic titles as possible. Along with
the access to over 65 OVID titles, we recently purchased access to the following titles:
- Cell
- Endocrinology
- Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism
- Journal of Virology
- Molecular and Cellular Biology
- Oncogene
- Science
Biochemistry (online) is also available, but the site license gives access only to main
campus and to our chemistry faculty.

Welcome
The USC School of Medicine Library welcomes Victor Jenkinson as the new Circulation
Librarian. A native of Columbia and a graduate of Lower Richland High School, Jenkinson
completed his undergraduate studies in English and History at the University of South Carolina.
He earned his M.L.I.S. from USC in December 1998. He and his wife, Ellan, have one daughter,
Lily, who is three years old. Victor likes to spend his spare time playing guitar in a local band,
"Felonious Swank." The staff here at the Library feel fortunate to have Victor join our ranks.
Please stop by and welcome him next time you visit the library.

New Laser Printer
There is something new behind the Circulation Desk in the SOM Library. Earlier this summer
we purchased a new laser printer that produces quality print jobs for our patrons. There is no fee
for copies for students and faculty; however, members of the general public will be charged .10
cents per page. The copies print on both sides of the page.
