  • The School of Medicine Library has many searchable databases and other resources for investigators. Please visit them:  School of Medicine Library

  • The IACUC has established a series of On-line Training modules for investigators which must be completed before animal use will be allowed. A notice will be sent to the IACUC when an investigator completes a module so that it may be entered in the training database. You must call Animal Resources at 777-8106 for the username and password for the courses.

  • NIH's Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care & Use of Laboratory Animals Tutorial will introduce you to the regulations and guidelines governing the use of animals in biomedical research.

  • Animal Welfare Information Center contains large sections of regulation enforcing the federal Animal Welfare Act. These regulations have the force of law and govern many aspects of laboratory animal care and use.

  • ILAR's Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, available from the National Academy Press, provides standards for the care and use of live, vertebrate animals in biomedical research.

  • The AVMA's Panel on Euthanasia uses the best scientific evidence to determine what methods of euthanasia are professionally acceptable. This document has been incorporated into both the Animal Welfare Act and the Public Health Service Policy as the single authoritative document determining how research animals may be euthanized. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view this document.

  • The MSDS Database has links and searches for Material Safety Data Sheets. All substances used in animal protocols must be documented for the IACUC so proper safety procedures may be taken.

  • The Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare has announced that the Guidelines for the Care and Use of Mammals in Neuroscience and Behavioral Research is now available via the OLAW website in PDF format with permission from the National Academy of Sciences.
